Reminiscences:

It's A Small World

by Rohn Engh

The world is getting smaller, and this story proves it.

In 1957, my wife, Jeri, who was on her way to attend her junior year of college at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, landed in London on the ocean liner the Queen Elizabeth. American students on board were greeted by British students who had volunteered to help the "Yanks" with their baggage and connecting trains to other parts of the British Isles.

Peter Johnston, a University of London student, introduced himself to Jeri, showed her London, and got her on the train to St. Andrews. They struck up a pen pal friendship. Thirty years later, when we visited him and his French wife, Clementine, in their home in Central England, I learned that Peter was a commercial pilot during the 60s and had flown out of the African town, Niamey, on the Niger River.

Niamey, then French West Africa, was familiar to me. A young German friend, Rudi Thurau, and I put in to the river port in 1957 after building a raft out of palm trees and gasoline drums and hooking it up to our motor scooter. Our trip ended halfway down river when I fell from a cliff while photographing, suffering a broken arm and internal injuries. I was released from the Niamey hospital shortly before Christmas, and wired my parents for passage to fly home.

When my parent's money was delayed, I got anxious and audacious. I approached the head of Texaco Petroleum in Niamey, a Mr. Locatelli, explaining my situation in French and asked to borrow $500. "I'd ike to be home for Christmas," I said.

We were strangers, but Monsieur Locatelli had heard about our attempt to raft down the Niger River, and how it had ended in a near-fatal accident. He was pensive for a long time, then pulled out his desk drawer and wrote out a check for the equivalent of $500 in French West African Francs. I bought my ticket to the USA.

On December 23rd, the money finally arrived from my parents. I paid Mr. Locatelli back, thanked him heartily and spent Christmas 1957 with my family in my home town, Ocean City, Maryland.

The following December 28th 1958, the Saturday Evening Post published 12 photos and my story of that ill-fated trip across the Sahara desert and down the Niger River.

Jeri, on her Christmas/New Year's vacation from her senior year in college, read the article, wrote to me. We arranged to meet and were married a year later!

But the story doesn't end there.

This past holiday, Peter Johnston and his wife, Clementine visited our farm from their current home on the west coast of France. It's a fishing village called Quimper.

Peter brought up the story about the fellow from Niamey who lent me $500. "Let me tell you something strange, "Peter said. "While visiting our local physician in Quimper, I just learned recently that my doctor, here in France, grew up in Niamey, West Africa."

"That's a coincidence," I said.

"I asked him what his father did in Niamey and he said he was the head of Texaco,", Peter said. "I asked him if his father ever mentioned the young adventurers who came through Niamey on their palm log raft hooked up to a motor scooter. "

'Sure did,' he said. 'That story is a legend in Niamey. And I often wondered if it were true...that my dad loaned a complete stranger from a foreign country $500. My father was no one to throw money away. I could never figure it out. He has since passed away, but always told that story around Christmas. I often wondered what happened to that American.'
"Well, guess what," Peter said to the physician. "My wife, Clementine and I are flying off tomorrow to visit Rohn and his wife, Jeri, in Wisconsin, USA. We'll wish him a Merry Christmas for you!"

I guess this really is a small world, huh?

PHOTOGRAPH WHAT MOVES YOU, THE DOLLARS WILL COME

Get On The Ball

I have a friend who loves photography, She also loves to play ping-pong, or as she calls it, table tennis.
It's a joy to watch her matches. She destroys her opponents (usually men) with an entertaining combination of ferocity and grace.
When she's not playing at her sport, she's photographing. The results are usually beautiful landscapes and rural scenics.

I once asked her if she ever sold her work.
"I've tried, but no dice. If I could just make a few sales, I could pay for my photography habit," she grumbled.

"But you can make sales, many sales," I said. “ Your roadblock is that you are putting your energy in the wrong direction."

"You mean I should stop my table tennis and concentrate more on my photography?"

"No, you should concentrate more on what you love doing most, - your table tennis. There are few photographers who understand the particulars of table tennis. You are one of them. At this moment, there are photobuyers looking for authentic pictures of table tennis."
"How do I find these buyers?" She asked.

"Photo editors look for table tennis pictures two ways: sometimes and always," I said. "The ‘sometime’ buyer is producing a textbook, brochure, DVD, video training, encyclopedia, etc. They might need a table tennis picture only once a year, or once a lifetime.
“The 'always' buyer is the photo editor who works for a special interest magazine, pr agency, or corporate publication that has table tennis as its focus."

"I know several of those," she said. "I never thought of supplying them with pictures."

Are you letting $$$ mysteriously slip away without knowing? Don’t operate your business blind folded. Our newest report by Mikael Karlsson shows you where you are losing out when it comes to cameras, software, office equipment, telephone, taxes and more.

Financial

One of the most well-known talk radio hosts on financial matters is Dave Ramsey. His mantra is always the same. Don't go into debt. If you can't afford to buy something without going into debt simply don't do it.

While this makes a lot of sense it's not always practical, especially for those of us who are running a business. Keeping up with demands from customers you'll sometimes find that you need to invest in new equipment before you can pay cash. There's also always the risk of technology and equipment simply breaking down and needing immediate replacement.

1. Protect Yourself

Insurance for your equipment is a very important part of being, and staying, in business. You shouldn't have too much and you shouldn't have too little. Too much will make you have to pay more than you need to and too little will leave you high and dry if you ever need to make a claim. There are specialized insurance companies, like Hill & Usher, that can offer you a tailor-made solution that will fit your specific needs.
I recommend separate business insurance. Yes, it can be a lot cheaper to get a rider, also known as an Inland Marine policy, on your homeowners or renters insurance. But, understand that if you have a claim, your insurance company might deem you a high-risk and drop your insurance. If they drop you it will be both hard and expensive to get a new company to insure you.

For newcomers only...
Need to find markets for your areas of photography?

Most entry-level stock photographers make the mistake (like most beginners in any creative field) of creating first…and then trying to find a market for their product. It’s a recipe for disaster.
If you reverse it (find the market--then create), you’ll be successful. (I.e. find the markets that focus on the subject areas that you like to photograph.)
Thanks to the Internet, you can easily find what markets are out there waiting for your special interest pictures.
Go to a search engine such as Google and type in the name of your category of pictures (let’s use “childhood education” as an example), a space, the magazine, a space and then “guidelines” (three phrases).

The results are interesting: 733,000 for childhood education-oriented periodicals. Granted, search engines are not perfect, but if only one-tenth of those periodicals and publishing houses turn out to be markets for your area of specialization, you need look no further for buyers for your photography.
This system works for any category of specialization you might have. -

How to Buy a Digital Camera

If you're new to using a digital camera , here are a few tips to keep in
mind:

· Consider the amount of megapixels. Generally the more megapixels you have, the better the quality of your image. This is especially important if you want to make enlargements. The reality is that a 3 megapixel camera will do the job for an 8x10 print, assuming that the optics, processor and firmware are of good quality. If you're printing at 11x14, a 6 megapixel camera will do the job, again, assuming the optics, processor and firmware are of good
quality. I
It's not necessary to spend a lot of money for a camera with 10
megapixels or more. Shooting at that image size will eat up a lot of disk
space quickly. Unless you're shooting for a high-end result, such as stock
photography, the higher megapixel count isn't necessary.

· Buy a camera with an optical zoom
as this produces the best picture quality. While digital zoom is available, it reduces the size of your image (and resolution). If you want to create a digital zoom, you can easily do so after the fact using image editing software.

· Make sure that the camera uses removable memory cards. You don't want to get stuck with a fixed amount of memory.

· Make sure the camera has a large LCD and rangefinder option. In addition, make sure the LCD doesn't wash out in the bright glare of sunlight).

· Consider the size of your camera and that it fits comfortably in your hands. If it's too small you run the risk of dropping it.

· Make sure your computer can match the system requirements of the camera. If in doubt, check your computer manual for more information.

· Consider purchasing two cameras, one a point-and-shoot that fits in your pocket, the other, a higher quality camera (DSLR) with interchangeable lenses and a high quality chip for studio and location photography. DSLR cameras also perform better in low light situations. This is one area where point-and-shoot cameras don't fare very well.

· Make sure that the camera has an optical viewfinder. LCD's don't display well in sunlight and they consume batttery power quickly.

Q&A -- How To Get (Or Give) Permission to Use a Copyrighted Work. http://www.photoattorney.com/?p=951

BOOK BURN -- French Court Finds Google Guilty of Copyright Infringement.
A French court has found Google guilty of copyright infringement for its ongoing efforts to scan books and put the content online.
The court imposed $430,000 in damages against the online behemoth and ordered it to remove online extracts of books published by French publisher La Martiničre. The court also imposed a daily fine of $14,300, effective until Google pulls La Martiničre extracts from its search results.
Though the French ruling applies only to France and only to a single publisher, it could provide a legal precedent for Google's increasingly controversial book scanning practice. Google began scanning books from US-based libraries five years ago and has now scanned about 10 million volumes; only 2 million of those books were scanned with the explicit consent of publishers, and about 2 million are no longer under copyright. No More Telephone

Collection Calls

Have you ever received a harassing telephone call from a bill collector? Assuming you are a struggling editorial stock photographer, attempting to keep the wolves from the door by paying your debts and credit card bills on time…

… and assuming you are making your best effort to keep your credit rating intact, here’s some information that might relieve you. After all, as editorial stock photographers, we want to put our energies to taking and marketing pictures, not battling the bill collectors.

I vividly remember the early days of my photography career when the “Incoming” box on my desk was filled, not with income, but with bills. If you’re now experiencing the same, take heart, the darkest hour is always the one just before sunrise.

Along with the exciting gratification of producing your photos, you have the demanding challenge of learning the marketing ropes. Also, it helps to consider the task of keeping ahead of the bill collectors, an equally adventurous aspect of your business.

You’re not alone. In times past, many a noted composer, writer, artist, or musician has been known to work feverishly on a composition or work of art in order to meet pressing debts. Dostoevsky, for example in 1879-80, wrote monthly installments of his now famous novel, “The Brothers Karamazov,” to appease the bill collectors. Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol” to be able to pay for his mother’s funeral.

It is not only unethical, but in many cases illegal,
for bill collectors or their representatives to
harass you with phone calls. Most bill collectors
are ethical, and it’s the exceptional, overzealous
representative from the bill collection profession
that puts a bad light on the rest of them. Some
of their techniques are in violation of both criminal
statutes as well as telephone company
applicable tariffs. Be alert.

TAKEAWAY: This is good if you are a service photographer. But service photographers rarely read this blog. I like to always say, “The commercial photography workshop is over in Room 17..” It’s a way of orienting photographers that your editorial stock photography marketing approach is 180 degrees the opposite than the commercial service photographer’s. Don’t mix the two. Photo editors stand over a wastebasket when they read their incoming mail. They also use sophisticated screening methods for incoming phone calls and knock-knock visits.
Your visitors (online) should be coming to you, not the reverse. Why? Because your use of keywords on your website or blog have matched exactly what they are seeking through their search methods.

"A penny saved is a penny earned" Benjamin Franklin was famous for saying.

Mikael Karlsson is developing a "Savings Guide" for stock photographers. In the coming months, we're going to feature some articles from his bank of saving tips. This week the subject is "Growing Your Business".

Marketing

In times of financial and economical hardship
one of the most common mistakes many business-owners make is to severely cut down on marketing. Without marketing you will not reach new customers and clients and sales will stagnate. Reaching new sources of income is crucial to grow any business, no matter how big, or small, the business or the customer base is.
Traditional marketing to reach editorial stock photography buyers consists of:
- postcards of all sizes
- promotional flyers
- and even printed catalogs in full color.
Needless to say both printing and mailing of these cost a lot of money.

A Web Site

If you don't have a web site, consider building one soon. It's a productive marketing tool and a great way to show off your photographs at a very reasonable price. There are free websites available, but these usually carry advertising or attach your free site to their main site as a sub-directory. Avoid these. They send a signal to photobuyers that you are at the entry level with your stock photography.
When starting out, your website doesn’t have to be intricate or large.
It can be simple, as long as it’s functional and updated often. Be sure to include prominent keywords in your source code to attract both search engines and potential clients who are looking for your specialty in stock photography.

I personally have a large web site with over 2,000 photos on-line. The reason is that many of the researchers I work with need to have a large selection of images and an easy way to access photos and forward them on to the authors and editors they work with.
Even though my photo gallery’s elaborate and large, the rest of my site is simple, very fast to load and easy to update. If you want to have a look, you can find my website at www.arrestingimages.com

Keeping up with the marketing and staying on the radar of photobuyers is vital to the survival of your business. Here are some ideas that will aid you in doing just that.

1. Tighten up your marketing list
If you send out 250 oversized postcards and you get 50 returned to you because of a wrong address, a company no longer in business, personnel changes, etc., you're still paying to mail those 20 percent of postcards that never reach their destination. Oversized postcards cost the same as a first-class letter. Currently $0.44 per postcard. 50 times $0.44 is $22. Since the total cost for mailing 250 postcards is $110, $22 is a large chunk to add to your cost.
In just five mailings you would be able to get one extra mailing out there with the postage savings by tightening up and updating your mailing list.

2. Print your postcards professionally
Printing 500 normal size postcards will set you back somewhere around $100 plus shipping and local taxes. If you compare this to printing your own you'll see that you can really save money by having the cards printed by a professional. If you print your own you have to weigh in cost of the card stock, cost of printer ink and wear and tear on your printer.
I outsource batches of 500 to 1,000 postcards three to five times per year. Each batch features a different full-color photo of mine.
Lately I have been experimenting with huge over-sized postcards and for me the adde d costs in printing and postage has been well worth it. There are a number of on-line printing services available and almost all of them offer coupons, rebates, discounts or other incentives. Personally I can recommend Modern Postcard and Vista Print. Both companies have delivered high-quality cards repeatedly to me over the years at a great price.
The only time when it doesn't make sense to print your cards professionally is when you operate with a very short mailing list. If you have fewer than 100 individuals on your mailing list, printing your own cards would make sense. My list is roughly 250 people, so a batch of 500 cards will cover two mailings. I rotate the batches so I don't send the same postcard too often.

3. Start A Blog

Marketing is about being visible. Having a blog that you link to from your website can be a great marketing tool. Promote it to your clients as yet another way for them to keep up with what you're doing; recent additions of photos to your files, upcoming photo-shoots etc.

Blog services such as Blogger, WordPress and others are typically free. Easy to set up and easy to get going. Be sure to post your best entries on your social networking accounts, Twitter, FaceBook, etc.
It takes a little initial effort to get your blog up and running. The trick with blogs is to keep updating and update often. The other trick is to keep it interesting and relevant. Keep to business related posts. Use key words in your posts that the search engines will pick up. This will result in a higher rank in Google and other search engine searches. This will result if free advertising for you.

Take advantage of the ease of adding photos to your posts. Use alt tags with your photos that will serve as keywords for you.
Once you start getting visitors you'll get feedback as to what people are reading. Use the free Google Analytics software to evaluate the productivity of your blog. This will give you insight of what works for your audience.

If you want to post things of a personal nature, please consider getting a separate blog for that. Some folks can find a great balance between personal and business related posts. For me personally, and my day-to-day situation, I can't think of a single thing in my personal life that would even slightly interest the photobuyers I regularly work with.

4. E-mail marketing
A good alternative to mailing postcards is to market through e-mail if your clients and photobuyers are open to it. It’s free. There are a number of services that will assist you in sending professional looking e-mails with opt out options and much more.
Constant Contact is one example and they offer a trial period free of charge so you can try it out and make sure it works for you and the folks you market to before you decide.
You certainly can rely on simply sending e-mails out from your own computer without subscribing to a service like that offered by Constant Contact and similar providers. Keep the e-mails simple and to the point.

Avoid animations at all cost. Use photographs but understand file sizes and how long it takes the recipients to download and open your e-mail messages. Consider sending your emails to photobuyers in both text and HTML format.
Remember to add a link to your blog and web site where visitors can sign up for your e-mail promotions and updates.

5. Spend a day at the library and bookstore
Constantly building and adding to your mailing list is a great way to expand your business. Buying address lists is very expensive and often the targeting leaves much to be desired. The good news is that you can easily build your own mailing list for zero dollars.
Spend a day at your local library and favorite bookstore. Browse books and magazines that cover the topic(s) that you specialize in. Write the titles and any contact information you can find down.

Use your computer to search Google or your favorite Internet search engine to find contact information you couldn't locate previously. If you don't have access to a computer or the Internet, your library is very likely to offer free access.
Search for new contacts and look through previous issues and publications to see what they have used in the past. This will assist you in tailoring your marketing exactly to the type of photographs individual photobuyers have a need for. As with any marketing effort the more you know about your target audience and their needs, the more successful your marketing will be.

6. The Internet
The Internet is another wealth of information about magazines, book publishers, journals, web sites etc. that might be interested in using your photographs. You can use this free service to find out who is looking for you and your photos at this moment. In the search bar of a search engine like Google, type in the words:
Publisher guidelines book magazine _________________ .
Where you see the “blank” above, fill it in with your particular specialty(s) in stock photography. You’ll find on the first two pages (20 entries) of the search, potential markets you never heard of. Some of the entries will lead to other markets that also need your category of stock photos.

HOW TO FIND A PHOTOGRAPHY TAX ADVISOR
`````````````````````````````````````````````
Looking for a photography tax professional knowledgeable in the area of intellectual properties?
Some people mistakenly think they can turn to a neighbor, or Uncle Jim, or that retired bookkeeper down the block, who is “good at taxes.” The price might be right, but for photographers who go this route, it costs them in the long run. Moreover, they’re opening their checkbook to educate this tax-help person, since the average tax accountant or CPA seldom deals with intellectual properties, if at all.
The aim is to save on your taxes, not to just pay them.
(“To evade taxes is illegal, to avoid is your constitutional right!”)
You want a photography tax adviser experienced in intellectual properties, who will show you how to apply for and get the write-offs (deductions) that are due you as a working photographer.
A tax accountant experienced in intellectual properties may not be easy to locate in your local neighborhood. But here is a simple method to find one. Check around your community and find several successful creative persons who are doing well in their business: musicians, filmmakers, software developers, artists, songwriters, photographers, etc.
Call each one and ask who they use for their accounting and tax work. After awhile, the same name will keep cropping up. He is your man (or woman).
Be sure to check out our Tax Advisor, Julian Block. https://www.photosource.com/cart/taxtips.php
THE CUP OVER-FLOW-ETH -- The year in review and a look at the future - We managed to grow significantly in the worst possible economic times. We now sell three times as many files as we did back in 2006. What's amazing is the average number of downloads per contributor has also risen significantly since 2006. http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=151691
TAKEAWAY: With millions of images flowing onto the Internet daily, does that make the photo editor's job easier? It makes it longer to find that right photo. Your answer to circumvent this avalanche of photos is to KEYWORD your specialized photos so that photobuyers come to you first (through a 'search') before going to the microstock warehouse as a last resort.
Laptop Security:
Prevent Your Laptop From
Being Stolen
Having a laptop is a great way to work....and if you travel, it offers excellent flexibility.
The down-side is...if you store personal and private information on your laptop, you could be subjected to Identity Theft if your laptop were ever stolen.
When traveling with a laptop, here are some important considerations:
1. Don't ever leave your laptop in your car
2. Use a router, either for LAN connections or for wireless (Asus makes a great one).
3. Never let your laptop out of your sight, especially in restaurants or coffee shops.
4. Use a security cable - and keep it locked.
5. Don't put your laptop on the floor in a restaurant or coffee shop. This reduces the risk of damage from spills.
6. Use a well-padded case.
7. If you have a movement alarm, use it.
8. Encrypt the data on your computer with software such as Identity Finder.
9. Protect your passwords with RoboFormtogo, which is a program that you can load on a flash drive and uses a secure password to access your system passwords.
10. If you have a business laptop and it's been stolen, notify your employer immediately and call the police. Also, take a look at the FTC web site and have a look at the section on deaing with data breaches.
- - - - - - - - - -
If you use the wireless capabilities on your laptop, be aware that while wireless access points are great for convenience and mobile Internet connectivity, there are some important things to keep in mind:
1. If you're on a home or business network, you should use encryption to protect your communications. Of your options, there is WPA (WiFi Protected Access) and WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). Of these two options WPA is the best.
2. Use both antivirus, anti-spyware protection, as well as a firewall.
3. Turn off Identifier broadcasting on your router.
4. Create strong passwords and change the router's preset password. Stronger passwords are tougher to crack.
5. Define which computers can access your network.
6. Public WiFi spots might not be secure. Don't send valuable information over this type of network.
7. Power down your WiFi network when you're not using it.
FAMILY FOTO FELONY -- Family photo shoot at California's Seacliff State Beach highlights obscure state law On Friday, a State Parks ranger told McGhee and at least two other holiday card photographers they were breaking the law by shooting photos in front of the pier at the state beach without a permit. The Basic Book of DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY,
by Tom Grimm and Michele Grimm; published by Plume Books.
This book lives up to its name; it is basic. It is a combination of “How to,” “Show &Tell,” and general digital photography information that will be almost all outdated in a years’ time. That said, most photography books within this subject area, suffer the same outcome, and with updates in versions, usually make very useful adjuncts to a beginning digital photographer’s library.
This well illustrated handbook, is about an inch and half thick, and gives you practical advice about choosing and using digital cameras, camera settings, as well as creating pleasing compositions. It touches on “workflow” from camera to computer, as well as organizing your digital images so you can find them in the future on your computer. This covers about half the book and again, is very general in nature.
In chapter 14, Editing and Improving Your Photos with Computer Software, the authors mention a number of difference programs to improve your images, along with some very sound advise that, generally speaking about editing software. Again, this is general type information that could easily be applied to any type editing software – nothing specific.
This general approach to specific software is also applied to chapter 15, Printing Your Digital Photos At Home, and was very informative and useful in next two chapters.
Chapter 16 and Chapter 17, Using Local and Online Photo Services To Bring Your Digital Pictures, and Sharing and Showing Off Your Digital Photos, were great and really illustrated well, how to use the World Wide Web to help the beginning digital photographer to master the “show and tell” of digital photography.
The two appendixes at the end of the book are probably worth the price of the book alone: Glossary of Digital Photography Terms and Getting More Help – Photography Web Sites. If basic information was the primary reason for writing this book, these two authors did a very good job, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to any stock photographer who’s sharing their knowledge of digital photography with a beginning photographer
Can you answer these questions?
· How do I get buyers to call me (instead of the other way around?)
·  I’ve won 3 photo contests. Does that qualify me to be able to sell my photos? (You’ll be surprised at the answer…)
· If there are 3,500 markets out there to sell my photos to, how do I know which one(s) is waiting for me at this moment?
· How do I get people to cooperate and agree to be in my photos (even if they are strangers?)
Hello,
I’m Rohn Engh, and I show photographers how they can successfully break into stock photography and make money with their photos.
Years ago, I had just returned from a European/African journey with loads of great pictures. I tried to sell them. Nobody bought. And then I learned what I was doing wrong.
I took the leap. My family and me settled on a farm in western
Wisconsin and I started selling out of my large size mailbox. When the Internet
came along, the selling task became even easier.
In the economy we find ourselves in now, you’re probably
looking for ways to sell those quality “extras” you’ve taken over the years.
Or maybe you’re a pro and would like to learn how to find even more outlets
for your images.
Here’s the deal   I’ve developed a 21-unit eCourse that will answer all of your above questions and many more like, “With the way the Internet is going, why should I start now to develop ‘Vertical Markets’ or “Can I travel free as a stock photographer?”
The cost for the 21-unit course, delivered in CD format is $89.95 – but wait… I’m offering a special Holiday Sale on my course at half price. Yes, -for only $44.93 plus postage and handling you will receive my entire 21-unit eCourse. Happy Holidays!.
But you have to act quickly because this Holiday Sale ends on December 31st.
And if you act quick –take advantage of my Early Bird Sale.
If you sign up before December 24th you can receive an extra bonus.
[   ]   How to Make The Marketable Photo.  Photobuyers at books and magazines, newspapers, and ad agencies prefer a certain format and design in your submitted photos. Once you take this short course,  you’ll be taking marketable pictures like the pros.
Are you letting $$$ mysteriously slip away without knowing? Don’t operate your business blind folded. Our newest report by Mikael Karlsson shows you where you are losing out when it comes to cameras, software, office equipment, telephone, taxes and more.
PICK A SPECIALTY YOU LOVE -- Why You Should Market Yourself as a Specialist - Even If You're a Generalist - If you portray yourself as a generalist - by defining your talents broadly and mixing many types of photography on your Web site - you may well be viewed as a jack of all trades, but a master of none.
http://rising.blackstar.com/why-to-market-yourself-as-a-specialist-even-if-youre-a-generalist.html
TAKEAWAY: Technology and science today make the renaissance man of the last century obsolete. Consumers today would prefer the specialist in any field, medicine, law, education, etc. The specialist can serve not only as a photographer but as a consultant to publishers.
The romance of the do-it-all photographer is fading.
Specialization might sound like a boring proposition, but it needn’t be if you love the area you choose to specialize in – - horses, railroads, childhood education, antique airplanes, motorcycles. The photo world is getting bigger, and so are the specialization markets. -RE
That First Published Photo
Can you remember your first published photo? I would guess it’s still vivid in your unfaded memory, if not even hanging on your den wall.
If you know a pro stock photographer, ask him or her what they received as payment for that first “sale”. A surprising number will say they received nothing.
Others will say they received a low payment they could not accept today, and they discourage beginners from accepting a token ‘credit line’ in payment for free use of a photo.
It's ironic that many photographers got their start with no pay or low pay. Yet they work to create roadblocks in the marketplace to prevent beginners from accepting opportunities to get their start in the same way.
It's somewhat like Hollywood actors who get their start in independent films or "B" movies, but when they reach stardom, try to repress the vehicles that gave them the chance to start out.
- - - - - - - - - -
"We know that beginning photographers when starting out,
don't have a track record yet, either in technical expertise or
in dealing professionally with photobuyers that would enable
them to jump right in with the rest of the pros, even though
their talent can match that of the pros."
- - - - - - - - - -
Or guitar pickers in Nashville. If a CD producer shouted out a studio window that he wanted someone to fill in, for free, -- two dozen guitarists will rush down the street to respond – and among them would be talent that could compete with the best in the world.
By the way, Luciano Pavarotti, the famous opera star who died recently, got his start by singing in a local. contest.
Until digital photography came along, much good photography was tucked away in shoe boxes and closets. The photographers were unknowns.
HIGH FEES
Why do ad agencies pay high fees (top dollar) to photographers and stock agencies? We know it's not benevolence, or out of the goodness of their heart.
How to avoid it…
Fake Software: What is it?
by Nathan Segal>
One of the fastest growing online scams is “fake software”, sometimes known as fake anti-malware software, or "Rogue" software.
It's marketed by advertising that looks like genuine software programs. You'll encounter seemingly legitimate names such as: DriveCleaner, AdvancedPCTweaker, PC Cleaner 2008, and many, many others.
Here are some things to know about rogue/fake anti-malware software:
When you visit one of these sites, you'll be encouraged to run a scan on your computer for spyware. The scan will inevitably find that your computer is infected with spyware (whether you have it or not) and will try to scare you into paying for the software to remove it.
- - - - - -
“If that software gets on your computer,
it can cause all sorts of problems. “
- - - - - -
If that software gets on your computer, it can cause all sorts of problems. Your machine will almost certainly slow down, you could encounter random popups, secondary infections and you could be charged for additional "services" or software you didn't purchase.
CAN I GET A REFUND?
Obtaining a refund is next to impossible because these companies frequently change name and URL's. To make matters worse, you could easily have become a victim of identity theft. If you suspect that your identity has been compromised, file a report with the FTC.
If you are considering installing anti-malware software
on your computer, here's what I recommend, call your local computer store for a recommendation or go to a trusted friend and see what they use. Don't buy anything online unless you know that the program is legitimate. It's far too easy to buy fake software, which could damage your computer and cost you hundreds of dollars to repair.
Your machine will almost certainly slow down, you could encounter random popups, secondary infections and you could be charged for additional "services" or software you didn't purchase.
Fake software is an enormous scam which affects users all over the world. It's extremely insidious and the names online make it even worse. According to one list I discovered, there were well over 400 different names for this software.
=============-----------------=============
Fake software.a It's a common problem. Give me 10 minutes of your time and I'll show you how to speed up your computer, rid yourself of computer infestations and protect yourself online.
Head and Shoulders Portrait Photography
Jeff Smith's Guide to Head and Shoulders Portrait Photography The goal of portrait photography is to capture the likeness of a person or a small group of people, typically in a flattering manner. Like other types of portraiture, the focus of photograph is the person's face, although the entire body and the background may be included.
He is a professional portrait photographer, studio owner, and photography instructor. He covers in detail posing a subject to make the most of their features and minimize any problem areas and how to use carefully executed lighting to make each subject look their very best.
Jeff Smith's Guide to Head and Shoulders Portrait Photography is targeted to the professional portrait photographer who would like to make head and shoulder portraits more creative, more flattering, and more profitable. Any serious amateur photographer will also benefit by Jeff’s techniques.
In "Guide to Head and Shoulders Portrait Photography" Jeff Smith shows the photographer how head and shoulders portraits can be just as rewarding as full-length portraits--both creatively and financially. From designing a customized portrait concept that clients will love (and buy), to lighting and posing the subject for a flawless effect, and to simple retouching for a polished look, Smith guides the photographer through the process from start to finish.
Also he explains how to get the perfect expression, whether it's a serious business headshot, a smiling portrait for Morn, or a photograph of the photographer's favorite model.
ENOUGH SPACE? -- Buy the Right SD Card for Your Camera. If a new digital camera is on your shopping list this season, you'll also need a memory card to store photos on. While some cameras come with a small starter card, most don't. In either case, you'll want to invest in a good card with lots of room for your pictures. These days, memory card capacity is typically measured in gigabytes. For hobbyist photographers, I recommend a minimum card size of 2GB. If you shoot a lot of photos or shoot in Raw mode (which produces significantly larger image files) you'll probably be happier with 8GB. The Great Library of Alexandria Lives On...
The Dawn of
Digital Pictures
In 1989 I heard about a lumbering digital Goliath, mysteriously gobbling up individual collections of transparencies, photo libraries, manuscripts, woodcuts, and illustrations. That was in '89.
CONTINUUM Productions Corporation (once called IHS (Interactive Home Systems) and later, in ‘94, CORBIS*, was the inspiration of Microsoft's founder, Bill Gates.
Early in 1994 I traveled out to Bellevue, Washington to their original HQ, a two-story building, to see what it was all about. CONTINUUM was still the banner name at that point.
CONTINUUM was on a roll and about to fly as a one-stop digital archive company that would encompass a wide range of subject areas.
Fine arts, culture, history, technology, science, and so on, would all be included. In the continuing process of expanding the archive, CONTINUUM was creating wide-ranging relationships with photographers, museums, private institutions, and government sources.
CONTINUUM actually was to be two organizations. The Content Licensing operation (IHS) was primarily a business-to-business digital stock photography service that launched in the fall of ’89. "Many people in the professional photography industry are thinking of us as a massive stock agency," said Charles Mauzy, Acquisitions Manager at that time.
"CONTINUUM is not limiting itself to the business of the stereotype agency with traditional content, markets, business, and administrative processes. The company's licensing business will develop and reach many new as well as traditional markets in the commercial and editorial marketplaces," Mauzy said.
The aim of the publishing side of CONTINUUM was to fulfill the company's original goal: to acquire visuals, audio, and text to produce multimedia products for traditional as well as the upcoming new age media: CD-ROM, (DVD’s hadn’t been invented yet), on-line searching, video clips, sound bites, etc.). Educational markets and home consumers were included in their target markets.
“Can it be done?” we were all asking then.
GREEN TVs? California (May Be) Leading The Way. As California goes, so goes the nation, or so we’ve heard. Therefore, this may be something to watch. The California Energy Commission, CEC (www.energy.ca.gov) has proposed changes to the Appliance Efficiency Standards that would increase the energy efficiency of new TVs sold in California. Beginning in 2011, new sets would have to reduce energy consumption by 33%, and by 49% starting 2013. Already, over 1000 sets currently meet the 2011 standards. This is important because, energy-wise, those big TVs consume about 10% of a home’s electricity. Some say big sets would disappear in CA, others say no way. There will be public hearings, etc., as in any proposed rule-making.
LOOKING FOR A DEAL…? We all know about Black Friday. And we’ve heard about Cyber Monday. Black Friday is the day of the year most major retailers rely on to get into the black on their balance sheets. Or so they say. In reality, Black Friday originated with the Philadelphia police in the 1960s, using it to describe the heavy city traffic on the day after Thanksgiving caused by all the shoppers looking for a deal. Fearing that the negative spin and visions of heavy traffic would keep shoppers away, retailers started saying it was the day they’d turn a profit. And Cyber Monday, the Monday after Black Friday, was originally a marketing gimmick created five years ago to get shoppers using the web. And it’s never been the top online sales day. So, did you contribute to Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or did you split your allegiance?
HTTP//:www.xyz@#-$-%^apres/vous>IV<&*.com…Internet Addressing.. It’s taken a few years, but top-level domain names will soon be able to be written in other than the Roman alphabet. Currently, portions of a web address can be written in other characters, but the familiar .com and other suffixes must be in Roman. The change will allow the top-level domain to be written using 17 other languages including traditional and simplified Chinese, Russian Cyrillic, Arabic, French, Korean Hangul and Hebrew.
Here are some ideas for savings that are often overlooked simply because we get stuck in a routine. I'm as guilty of it as everyone else and most of these tips are based on my own personal experience and recent savings.
1. Negotiate your cell-phone plan
How long ago did you sign up for your current cell-phone plan? I had gone one year beyond my contract. Upon contacting my carrier I asked if they had any current incentives for the kind of plan I already had. It turned out that they did and if I was prepared to sign up for a two-year contract I would be able to save $18 per month keeping the same service, minutes and coverage. That is $216 per year.
2. Change your cell-phone plan
When I signed up for my current cell-phone plan I was working a lot for various state agencies and needed instant access to e-mail all day every day. These days I honestly don't need it even though I still like it. But once I looked at the numbers I realized I didn't like it enough to warrant the high fees I was paying. My plan ran roughly $110 per month.
By simply changing plans from a data plan (allowing for e-mails and web access) and switching to a voice plan I saved $55 per month. That's a whopping $660 per year!
3. From land-line to VOIP
Do you use your regular land-line phone for business? Do you end up spending a lot of time on the phone with clients, researchers and editors every month? If so it might make sense to you to switch from a regular phone to a Internet-based phone service. VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol, allows you to place calls to any phone anywhere in the world through your computer. I eliminated my business phone line and switched to Skype. For an amount that is much lower than that of my old phone-line I pay the monthly fee and get free calls to anywhere in the US and Canada. I also get free calls to any other Skype subscribers in the world as well as a very low per-minute cost when I need to call clients or family back in Europe. The savings on the plan alone amounts to $19 per month or $228 per year. My cost for calling have dropped by more than double, averaging $40 per month. All in all a grand total savings of slightly more than $700 per year.
Budget for a good headset with a noise-cancelling microphone. I recommend looking for one with a volume control and a mute button built in. VOIP works fine on both PCs and MACs. You don't need the latest and greatest computer. You do need Internet broadband service though.
Note that some VOIP services do not work with 911 Dispatch locator services and if you have an emergency and call 911 they might not be able to find your location automatically. This locator service can be essential for Dispatch and First Responders to be able to find you in a state of emergency. Some VOIP providers offer 911 locator service in some areas. Make sure you check with your provider before signing up if this is an important feature to you. Also ask your local Police Department or Sheriff's Office Dispatch if they have any good, or bad, experiences with calls from VOIP-phones.
Also worth noting is that if your Internet is down or if there's a power outage your Internet based phone service will not work.
4. Re-negotiate your internet plan
As editorial stock photographers we often need to e-mail large digital photos. There's also the need to update web sites, send files by FTP and many other tasks that a fast Internet service makes easier and faster. But, infrastructure for providers is updated and expanded more often these days. This means it gets cheaper and more efficient for your Internet provider to offer high-speed access. Often plans that are only a couple of years old are already outdated as far as the speeds offered and the price paid. Because of this it is worth your while to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and ask them for current incentives if you're willing to sign a contract with them for a year or two. Compare speed offered with monthly fees. Fees for usage over a certain amount each month is a thing of the past and should be negotiated out of any contracts.
5. Wait with investment.
Yes, having the latest technology gadgets and gizmos is nice and a lot of fun. In reality it makes very little fiscal sense though. I know, I can hear the collective wince of all my fellow gadget-lovers out there. I used to update my technology as often as I could and always wanted to have the latest and the greatest.
While it makes sense to invest in technology that will save you significant time or effort in your daily work it is noteworthy that they keywords here are significant and daily. Technology is like vehicles, simply by purchasing a new car and driving it off the lot the value drops by roughly 20 percent.
To save on technology the magical word is wait. Avoid buying on credit, avoid leasing and simply wait. Yes I would love to exchange my 3-year-old MacBook Pro for a brand new one. In all honesty though would a new one really give me much more that my old one isn't?
The honest answer is no it wouldn't.
Hence the investment isn't really worth it for me and I'll wait. I'll figure out how much I would have spent each month paying off a new laptop and put that in a business savings account instead. That way the money will be there when it really comes time to bite the bullet and make the investment.
JUMP AHEAD by avoiding common marketing blunders. Success is sometimes called failure avoidance. Photobuyers can't be expected to point out the mistakes you might be repeating. Look for this column each month to provide you with a short cut to recognizing blunders to avoid. Refine your strategies for success. Whether you are starting out or starting over, you might recognize these pitfalls.
MAKE THE MATCH As much as your images are an art form, so is your marketing strategy. The process need not be cumbersome or terrifying if you understand the simple technique of making the right match: your work with the photobuyer's need. In other words, you match the direction, the way your photography is going with the publishing house(s) that are seeking your type, style, and subject matter of your photos. Once mastered, you can repeat the process over and over, gaining new buyers and shooting within the framework of subject matter that has great interest for you. and the publishing house(s) you have made the match with.
WHO? -- When Names Change to Anticipate the Future. APPLE dropped the word "computer" from its name in January 2007, soon after it introduced the iPhone. Likewise, Fuji Photo Film shortened its name to Fujifilm in 2006, when sales of its photography products slipped to less than one-third of total revenue. These moves symbolize fundamental shifts in how these companies see themselves and how others perceive them.
How Microstock is Ripping Photographers Off
by Sidonsphotography.
Background: I hold a few photographs at Microstock agencies, probably around 8 photographs at each of them. Why so few? Well really because I have no intention of making money that way, and mostly what I use them for is getting free images for slide shows and presentations (I make enough off the 8 to pay for my image purchasing appetite). The only stuff I put up there is the photos I'm not too proud of.
The Ripping Off Part: I was searching for my web site's name on the Internet and found one of my images for sale at an agency I'd never heard of for $80 per download. Hmmm...no business relationship....hmmm....Houston we have a problem. I knew they had obtained the image from one of the Microstock sites, but there is no provision in the RF rights for selling the sales rights to the photo. I contacted this company.
The company informed me that they were a re-seller for one of the Microstock sites. In other words, every time they sold that photo for $80, the Microstock site was notified and provided me with my paltry $1. You gotta be kidding me....nope. That is what's happening, and if you read the fine print on your contracts with these devils they are working totally within their rights to do so.
Here's another kicker for you...the photo that they were selling was from an account that I had actually closed with the Microstock site.
The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby
START WITH A GOOD CAMERA -- A reassuring point he makes early on is that you don't have to break the bank on expensive gear to shoot great photos. He offers great advise and timely tips on how to prioritize your budget (lion's share to the lens). I also liked his philosophy of "getting it right in the camera." No matter how sophisticated your software and post-production skills, if the image doesn't possess certain qualities coming out of the camera (i.e.: sharp focus), it's impossible to rehabilitate later. WRONG PHOTO? --
Keith Ellison is a pretty safe bet to win his Minnesota district in 2010, but as of this week he officially has a challenger: Minneapolis lawyer Lynne Torgerson. But judging by the main photo on her Web site, it's unclear if Torgerson is ready to give up the law just yet. Beneath a "Torgerson for Congress" banner is a photo of Torgeson in front of ... the Supreme Court. http://bit.ly/4Dqgkw
TAKEAWAY: With the unbridled availability of stock photos, (and amateur researchers who know little about photo research) we’re going to see more mistakes like this. "The How To Market Your Photos" eCourse produced by Rohn Engh, of my own state of Wisconsin, is an excellent way for stock photographers -both pros and amateurs-, to brush up on their marketing skills when it comes to learning what's going on in stock photography today. The audio-visual CD format is an excellent choice cause it is so much more engaging than a written format. I also valued the interview portions with other industry experts, as well as the use of photos to illustrate certain points. I think that people who purchase this course will feel their money has been well-spent!
ORDINARY? -- Demi Moore's 'photoshopped' W cover: is it really her body?
Demi Moore's W cover has hit the news again after bloggers claimed her 'photoshopped' body actually belongs to catwalk model Anja Rubik. Fashion observers have pointed out the remarkable similarity between the magazine image and photographs of Rubik wearing the same Balmain corset dress on the runway in Paris earlier this year. A spokesman for W said that the magazine "did not do anything unusual or out of the ordinary on Demi Moore for the photo on the cover of W. Demi is an extraordinarily beautiful woman and we feel our cover reflects that."
Athena Lonsdale holds a picture of Cyrus, her dog photographer, on Tuesday at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography Gallery where she is mounting a show of her and Cyrus’ work.
